Excelsior’s Patriotic Spirit helped shape the Appaloosa and Harlequin breeding program at Elderwood Farms in Millington, Tennessee. Although Spirit has been sold, his genetic line remains firmly represented through retained offspring and another generation of spotted cria. We had a hard time parting with this boy, and his descendants remind us why! During his time here, we appreciated Spirit’s masculine presence, strong conformation, and tremendous fleece density. His show career began as a mature male, when judges commented on his fleece brightness and the handle he had maintained with age. He earned four first-place ribbons, including wins in both halter and fleece at the 2018 AOA National Show. Notable Offspring: • ELWD’s Without a Hitch - Retained Appaloosa herdsire; 8x Blue and second place in both halter and walking fleece at the 2025 AOA National Show. • Elderwood’s Maybe It Was Memphis - Harlequin Appaloosa; 11x Blue including Nationals, and dam of Appaloosa Elderwood’s Bonanza. • ELWD’s Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong - Harlequin Appaloosa; 1x Blue. • ELWD’s When September Ends - Lightly spotted Appaloosa; 3x Blue.
