A Chilean Line Carried Forward

Some Appaloosa and Harlequin bloodlines are relatively easy to follow because the pattern can be traced through generations of visibly patterned animals. Others leave us with more questions than answers.

Shasta Springs Kodachrome was a confirmed Harlequin/Appaloosa male whose maternal line traces to the Chilean import Tilama-Chapoco. His sire, SCF Lucky Luciano, was registered Dark Brown, while Tilama was registered Medium Fawn with True Black as a secondary color.

Tilama’s own phenotype remains uncertain, but her production record includes multiple confirmed Appaloosa offspring produced through different sires. That earlier maternal question is explored separately through Appy Origins: Tilama-Chapoco.

Kodachrome’s place in the story is much clearer. Among Tilama’s currently documented patterned offspring, his branch appears to have become the strongest continuing line, producing multiple Appaloosa, Harlequin, and Wild Card Harlequin descendants extending into the modern breeding population.

Historical Significance

Kodachrome’s historical significance is found primarily in the strength and continuation of his own production.

He produced only seven registered offspring, yet five are currently verified as Appaloosa, Harlequin, or Wild Card Harlequin. Five of his offspring also went on to reproduce, allowing his influence to continue through multiple branches. At least five of his ten currently documented grandcria are confirmed Appaloosa or Harlequin, with another showing a probable patterned phenotype based on current registry information.

Those numbers become even more meaningful when viewed within his maternal family. While Tilama-Chapoco produced other confirmed patterned offspring, Kodachrome appears to represent the strongest currently documented branch to continue into recent generations.

An Earlier Maternal Connection

Kodachrome’s dam, Tilama-Chapoco, was a Chilean import with ten currently documented registered offspring. Three are presently confirmed as Appaloosa or Harlequin: Ameripaca’s Tessa, Limestone Ridge’s Chakita, and Shasta Springs Kodachrome.

Kodachrome and Chakita were full siblings by SCF Lucky Luciano, while Tessa was produced by the unrelated True Black sire Acero Marka’s Champ. The appearance of confirmed patterned offspring through different sires makes Tilama’s maternal contribution an important historical research lead, although it does not establish her as the genetic source of the pattern.

Pattern Across the Next Generation

The strength of Kodachrome’s branch becomes clearer when the next generation is examined.

His ten currently documented grandcria include at least five verified patterned animals:

• IlliniAlpaca Calico Cookie, Harlequin
• IlliniAlpaca DotDotCom, Appaloosa
• Elderwood’s Hidden Gemma, Appaloosa

Alidon’s Mojo also appears to show some form of pattern based on available registry information. Until photographic or other documentation confirms the phenotype, The Appy Archives will continue to treat Mojo as probable rather than verified.

The remaining currently documented grandcria appear solid based on available records.

The Line That Continued

Among Tilama-Chapoco’s currently documented patterned offspring, Kodachrome appears to represent the strongest continuing branch identified through present research.

Several sibling lines ended without production or have not produced a registered descendant in many years. Kodachrome’s family followed a different path. Five of his seven offspring reproduced, and their descendants extend through multiple branches.

The dates are particularly important. Kodachrome has documented grandcria born in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. This places his family firmly within the modern breeding population and distinguishes his branch from several earlier Tilama lines whose current continuation has not been identified.

His offspring also carried the phenotype forward with considerable consistency. Five of seven direct offspring are currently verified Appaloosa, Harlequin, or Wild Card Harlequin, and patterned animals continue to appear among the next generation.

More Than One Patterned Branch

Kodachrome’s descendants are also notable because the continuation did not depend upon a single exceptional offspring.

Patterned grandchildren can be traced through both Illini Shannon’s Tango and Illini’s Black Opal, while Largo Koda and IlliniAlpaca Morpheus established additional recent branches. Rio Springs, although registered White, also produced a descendant whose registry information suggests possible pattern.

This distribution across multiple offspring is important because Kodachrome’s influence was not preserved through only one narrow line. Several independent branches carried his genetics forward into recent generations.

Legacy

Shasta Springs Kodachrome carried an unusual Chilean maternal line into a much more recent population of Appaloosa and Harlequin alpacas.

His maternal history raises questions that reach back through Tilama-Chapoco, but Kodachrome’s own contribution is much easier to document. Five of his seven registered offspring were Appaloosa, Harlequin, or Wild Card Harlequin, and five offspring produced registered descendants of their own. Patterned grandcria appeared through multiple branches, with descendants documented through 2025.

The progression demonstrates why smaller historical families should not be judged only by the number of animals they produced:

Kodachrome’s importance lies not in answering where the pattern originally came from, but in showing what happened once it reached him. His branch preserved, expanded, and carried that patterned influence into the modern population.
