A Harlequin Beyond the Registry Label

Maria’s Angel was a Chilean-born Harlequin whose photographs preserve something her registry classification does not fully convey. Registered as Light Silver Grey with Dark Silver Grey as a secondary color, she was not identified through the selected Appaloosa/Harlequin phenotype. Her historical photograph, however, documents the distinctive pattern that makes her relevant to this collection. 

That distinction is central to her story. A search limited to explicitly recorded Appaloosa and Harlequin phenotypes could overlook an animal whose appearance is documented elsewhere. Maria’s Angel provides a clear example of why photographs and historical observations belong alongside pedigree and production records.

Her significance extends beyond that missing designation. Seven of her eight registered offspring reproduced, and her family includes identified patterned descendants across six generations. The most extensive continuation currently documented developed through her daughter, Enchanted Hill Oh-Be-Joyful.

Historical Significance

Maria’s Angel represents a historical patterned female whose importance becomes clearer when her photograph and family are considered together. Her registry colors describe a grey animal, but they do not independently communicate the Harlequin phenotype visible in the photographic record.

Her production also illustrates why an ancestral family cannot be evaluated solely by counting visibly patterned direct offspring. Enchanted Hill’s Tyedye is the only one of her eight offspring currently identified as Appaloosa or Harlequin. Nevertheless, patterned descendants appear farther down other branches, including the families of Little Larry, Ore Hill Mario, and Enchanted Hill Oh-Be-Joyful.

The absence of a confirmed phenotype should not be interpreted as proof that every other offspring was solid. Some remain insufficiently documented, just as Maria’s Angel’s own registry designation did not capture the full picture.

Appy Origins Connection

As a Chilean import, Maria’s Angel does not have identified parents in the reviewed registry record. Her documented pedigree therefore begins with her, rather than with named ancestors that can be traced farther back.

That does not mean the pattern originated with her or that she was its single source in every later descendant. It means the documented ancestry currently begins with a Chilean-born female whose Harlequin appearance can be established through photographs.

Her descendants subsequently combined her ancestry with other families. Tyedye and Enchanted Hill Penuche, for example, were both sired by Xus. Those mating connections remain part of the history and must be considered alongside Maria’s Angel’s contribution. 

Production Record

Maria’s Angel produced eight registered offspring between 1999 and 2007. Seven have registered production, with Maria’s Super Mario the only offspring for which no descendants are currently shown. Together, the seven producing offspring account for 15 documented grandcria. 

The current research identifies 42 patterned descendants: one direct offspring and 41 animals in later generations. Of those later descendants, 39 occur within the Oh-Be-Joyful branch. These are documented identifications from the material reviewed, not an assumption that every unlisted descendant was non-patterned.

The Oh-Be-Joyful Line

Oh-Be-Joyful produced Enchanted Hill Appalucy, Enchanted Hill Cookie, Oh-Bo, Be Happy, and Illini’s Minnow. Appalucy, Cookie, and Minnow have registered offspring, with the identified patterned continuation concentrated in Appalucy’s and Minnow’s families. 

This is one direct offspring branch of Maria’s Angel, but it subsequently divides into several distinct descendant families. Those branches include recent Appaloosa and Harlequin animals across multiple farms and breeding programs.

The Appalucy Branch

Enchanted Hill Appalucy, an identified Appaloosa/Harlequin granddaughter of Maria’s Angel, produced Apple, Lutau, Teton, and Barbie. Apple, Lutau, and Teton are also identified as patterned.

The Apple family provides the longest documented generational route in this research:

Maria’s Angel → Oh-Be-Joyful → Appalucy → Apple → Apple Dumpling → Stone Pine Iris → Rare Gem Morning Bloom. 

Identified patterned animals along that route include:

• Enchanted Hill Apple - Great-granddaughter of Maria’s Angel.
• Enchanted Hill Apple Dumpling - Great-great-granddaughter.
• Rare Gem Morning Bloom - Sixth-generation descendant, born in December 2025.

Stone Pine Iris remains part of the documented pedigree connection, but her own pattern has not been confirmed in the material supplied. Morning Bloom’s appearance therefore should not be presented as proof that every animal along this route displayed the same phenotype.

Two additional Appalucy families also contain patterned descendants:

• Enchanted Hill Teton and his son Triple Threat - Identified patterned great-grandson and great-great-grandson of Maria’s Angel.
• SunsetMtn’s Tinsel and SunsetMtn Toffee Spots - Identified patterned great-great-granddaughters through Enchanted Hill Barbie. 

The Lutau Branch

Enchanted Hill Lutau, another Appalucy offspring, became a substantial contributor to the later family. The reviewed records show 28 direct offspring, of which 19 have been identified as Appaloosa or Harlequin.

Those identified patterned offspring, all great-great-grandcria of Maria’s Angel, include:

• EPIC X Jupiter, EPIC X Cerberus, EPIC X Neptune, and EPIC X Phoebe
• Rainbow’s Johnny On The Spot, MBFL Hazel Nut, DERWYDD Constellation, and DERWYDD Topsy Turvy
• DERWYDD Mister Fashion, Thor Farms Loki by Lutau, LuTau’s Madison, and EPIC X Celestial Cygnus
• MBFL Harold’s Magic Crayon, PAL Sweet Spot, BUCK BROOK Pine Valley Starlight, and MBFL Sun Sprinkles
• Blooming Cactus’ GinTau, PLUM CREEK LuTau’s Hot Spot, and Cactus Hills Juniper Joy. 

Several of these animals produced another generation. Identified patterned fifth-generation descendants of Maria’s Angel include:

• Mr Freckles of DRMS and Clear Mountain’s Sucrose, through DERWYDD Constellation.
• MST Skittles, through DERWYDD Topsy Turvy.
• MTAR Shoulda Been a Cowboy, 5S Backroads, 5S Cee Cee, ELWD’s Hittin The High Notes, Elderwood’s Twitch Craft, and Elderwood’s Bonanza, through EPIC X Celestial Cygnus. 

These are several later branches beneath Lutau, not additional direct offspring lines from Maria’s Angel. Keeping those relationships clear preserves the distinction between the number of patterned descendants and the number of ancestral routes through which they descend.

The Minnow Branch

Illini’s Minnow provides another patterned continuation through Oh-Be-Joyful, separate from Appalucy’s family. Minnow has five registered offspring in the reviewed record, including the identified patterned son Illini’s Cincinnati Jack.

• Illini’s Minnow - Appaloosa/Harlequin granddaughter of Maria’s Angel.
• Illini’s Cincinnati Jack - Appaloosa/Harlequin great-grandson of Maria’s Angel. 

Minnow’s family also continues through other offspring, although their pattern classifications have not been established in this review. The broader registered continuation remains part of her family history without automatically being included in the patterned count.

Patterned Descendants in Other Branches

Although Oh-Be-Joyful accounts for most of the identified patterned continuation, she is not the only Maria’s Angel offspring whose descendants include Appaloosa or Harlequin animals.

• DDAR Coffee Stain - A registered Appaloosa/Harlequin great-great-granddaughter through Little Larry → Leopardina Royalty Storm → DDAR Blu Moon. 
• Caramella Ice Cream Sundae - A registered Appaloosa/Harlequin great-great-granddaughter through Ore Hill Mario → Charming Rose → Bruno Lee. 

Butterscotch Chip, a grandson through Enchanted Hill Penuche, remains a possible additional patterned descendant. His recorded colors prompted further interest, but without photographic or sufficiently specific phenotype confirmation, he is excluded from the confirmed count.

These smaller branches are important because they preserve patterned descendants outside the much larger Oh-Be-Joyful family. Their presence also reinforces the need to trace through intervening generations whose own phenotypes may not be fully documented.

Legacy

Maria’s Angel’s legacy combines a missing historical phenotype designation with a substantial documented descendant family. Her photograph preserves her as Harlequin, while the production records connect her to patterned animals across several offspring branches and six descendant generations.

The dates distinguish those branches without settling every question about their survival. The reviewed Little Larry and Ore Hill Mario branches include patterned animals born in 2011 and 2012, with no further registered offspring shown beneath those particular animals. Oh-Be-Joyful’s family, by comparison, includes identified patterned descendants born through 2026. This makes it the strongest currently documented recent patterned continuation, rather than proving that every other branch has ended.

Some descendants also carry Maria’s Angel through more than one pedigree route. Elderwood’s Avis Cygnature, for example, appears through both the Cygnus and Minnow families. Those are two valid ancestral paths to one animal, not two separate descendants, and her appearance in the pedigree alone does not establish her pattern classification. 

Maria’s Angel’s story demonstrates why preservation requires more than searching for a selected phenotype. Without the photograph, part of her identity could be missed. Without the descendant research, the extent and distribution of her family would remain much less visible.

Archive Summary

Maria’s Angel remains an early documented patterned reference point for her family. Her Archive preserves both the animal visible in the historical photograph and the generations that followed her, including animals whose connection would be easy to overlook without tracing the intervening pedigrees.
