The Line Saver

Sometimes a bloodline survives because a prolific animal leaves dozens of descendants. Sometimes it survives because someone finds the right animal at exactly the right time.

FPC Peruvian Aiko was a Harlequin female whose pedigree traced directly through TGA Mario, Senna’s Zoey, and 6Peruvian Century. Mario died when Aiko was still a cria, leaving her as his only registered offspring and the sole remaining path through his branch of Zoey’s family.

Years later, Aiko appeared in an online herd dispersal. She was unproven and had never been bred. Elderwood Farms purchased her.

What could easily have become the end of a rare line instead became its revival. Aiko ultimately produced six known cria during her lifetime. Every one of them was Appaloosa or Harlequin. Five survived to become registered offspring. Her sixth and final cria, an Appaloosa male, was lost during the difficult delivery that also took Aiko’s life.

Historical Significance

Aiko’s importance begins before she ever produced a cria. Her sire, TGA Mario, was an Appaloosa son of Harlequin female Senna’s Zoey, herself a daughter of 6Peruvian Century. Mario died on August 4, 2011, less than two months after Aiko’s birth. He left only one registered offspring: Aiko.

That made her the sole registered continuation of Mario’s branch. But simply existing did not guarantee that the line would survive.

Aiko remained unproven and had never been bred when she later appeared in an online herd dispersal. Elderwood Farms acquired her and began deliberately pairing her with selected males in an effort to preserve and expand the genetics she carried.

Among those matings were breedings to WT Gold’s Paiute, Golden Touch’s Easy Rider, and Excelsior’s Patriotic Spirit, helping establish multiple daughters through which the family could continue.

The outcome became one of the most consistent patterned production records within the Elderwood program. Aiko produced six known cria. All six were Appaloosa or Harlequin.

Six for Six

Perhaps the most striking part of Aiko’s production record is its consistency. Her six known cria represented six separate opportunities for the visible Appaloosa/Harlequin phenotype to continue.

It appeared every time.

Five of those cria survived to registration. Four of those five registered offspring subsequently produced another generation. What began with Mario’s single daughter had become several distinct branches of patterned descendants.

Of Aiko’s nine currently documented registered grandchildren, five are confirmed Appaloosa or Harlequin. The phenotype that had once depended upon a single unproven female was now represented through several branches and multiple generations.

Legacy

Following this family from its beginning illustrates just how close the line came to disappearing.

6Peruvian Century produced a relatively small number of offspring. His Harlequin daughter Senna’s Zoey produced eight, but only three are documented as reproducing and only two were themselves confirmed Appaloosa or Harlequin. Zoey’s Appaloosa son TGA Mario died before his fourth birthday after producing only one registered offspring. That offspring was Aiko.

Aiko was still unproven when Elderwood encountered her in a herd dispersal. The entire continuing Mario branch could have ended there. Instead, Aiko became the point where the genetic funnel began widening again:

Then:

1 surviving daughter → 6 patterned cria → 5 registered patterned offspring → 4 producing branches → 9 currently documented registered grandchildren

Aiko did more than continue the line. She gave it room to survive.

A Lasting Elderwood Family

Aiko eventually became much more than a genetic preservation project for Elderwood Farms. She became one of the foundational females behind the farm’s modern Appaloosa and Harlequin breeding program.

Three of her patterned daughters - Totally Bewitched, Voodoo Queen, and Maybe It Was Memphis - were retained by Elderwood, allowing the family to continue through deliberately selected future generations.

Aiko died on March 6, 2024, following complications from a difficult birth. Her final cria, an Appaloosa male, was also lost during the delivery. Including that final cria, Aiko finished her life with a remarkable record: six known cria and six Appaloosa or Harlequin offspring.

By the time she was lost, however, the line that had once depended entirely upon her was no longer confined to a single animal. It had become a family.
