One Offspring Was Enough

Not every influential alpaca leaves behind a long production record. Sometimes, one offspring is enough.

TGA Mario, an Appaloosa son of Senna’s Zoey and maternal grandson of 6Peruvian Century, died on August 4, 2011 - one day before his fourth birthday. His registry records list the cause of death as infection.

Mario left behind just one registered offspring. That daughter was FPC Peruvian Aiko, a Harlequin female born June 11, 2011. Had Aiko never reproduced, Mario’s branch of this already narrow Century line would have ended with her. Instead, that single daughter became the foundation of the largest surviving branch descending from Senna’s Zoey - and the only one currently documented continuing through multiple generations.

Historical Significance

TGA Mario represents the critical bottleneck within one of the surviving branches descending from 6Peruvian Century. His dam, Senna’s Zoey, was a verified Harlequin daughter of Century who produced eight registered offspring. Only two of those offspring are currently confirmed as Appaloosa or Harlequin, and only three are documented as having produced registered offspring.

Of those branches, Mario’s became the only one presently documented continuing through multiple generations. Mario himself had little opportunity to establish a large production record. He died in 2011 at just under four years of age, leaving only one registered offspring.

Yet the influence of that single daughter would eventually extend far beyond what Mario’s production total might suggest. His only registered offspring, FPC Peruvian Aiko, was Harlequin. Aiko would later produce five registered offspring - and remarkably, all five are confirmed Appaloosa or Harlequin.

Legacy

Mario’s story is a reminder that genetic influence cannot always be measured by the number of offspring an animal produced. His entire registered production record consists of one daughter. But that daughter produced five patterned offspring. Those five produced nine currently documented members of the next generation, with Appaloosa and Harlequin patterning continuing through multiple branches.

From Aiko, what had become a single fragile path began to expand again. The numbers tell the story clearly:

And among those nine great-grandchildren, five are presently confirmed Appaloosa or Harlequin. For a male whose life and breeding career ended before his fourth birthday, Mario left an unexpectedly enduring legacy.

Even that legacy was not secure. His only daughter, Aiko, would remain unproven and unbred until she appeared years later in an online herd dispersal - placing this surviving branch at risk of disappearing once again. That story continues with FPC Peruvian Aiko.
