A Different Kind of Influence
Not every animal important to Appaloosa and Harlequin history was a prolific producer or even an obvious source of pattern. Sometimes an animal becomes important because of where his genetics were introduced and what happened afterward.
NWA/Hearsum Paulo produced only five registered offspring, yet those five represented repeated crossings into established or pattern-associated Appaloosa and Harlequin families. Three of Paulo’s offspring are themselves verified Appaloosa or Harlequin, while patterned descendants continued through additional branches in later generations.
With only five offspring, Paulo became woven into multiple modern spotted pedigrees. His influence represents a different chapter in patterned alpaca history, not the expansion of a single prolific line, but the strategic introduction of an outcross across several already significant families.

Historical Significance
Paulo’s significance is unusual because his influence cannot be understood by looking at his production total alone.
He produced just five registered offspring, but the breedings themselves are noteworthy.
Paulo was bred to females representing established or potentially significant patterned families. His offspring included crosses involving Senna’s Zoey, the Harlequin daughter of 6Peruvian Century; Candlelight’s Cookies and Cream, a Harlequin female out of My Peruvian Zephyrus; and SH Aztec, whose sire was the Appaloosa Curly Calib. Even where the dam herself cannot currently be confirmed as Appaloosa or Harlequin, the pedigree connection remains important.
In effect, every one of Paulo’s five offspring brought his genetics into a family already associated with Appaloosa or Harlequin ancestry. That makes Paulo particularly interesting as an outcross bridge - an animal whose relatively limited production became distributed across several patterned lines rather than concentrated within a single family.
An Intriguing Maternal Line
Paulo’s paternal pedigree traces through 4Peruvian Pachacuti 6011, but firsthand breeder recollection suggests that his maternal side deserves equal attention.
Former Paulo owner Carol Karsten remembers his dam, 11Ava Jewel, as particularly noteworthy: “The key was the dam. She had funny spots on her head.”
Jewel was registered Medium Brown and White. Her dam, NWA, LTD Treasure, was a blue-eyed white female. Karsten also recalls Treasure appearing within the maternal ancestry of Xus, a well-known Appaloosa.
That repetition is intriguing, but it should not be interpreted as proof that Jewel or Treasure was the source of Paulo’s later patterned influence. At present, the registry establishes the pedigree relationship, while Karsten’s recollection preserves valuable historical context regarding Jewel’s appearance and the significance breeders associated with that maternal family. The Treasure line therefore remains an important subject for continued research.

Five Offspring, Multiple Patterned Families
Paulo’s five offspring illustrate why his influence is greater than his production number suggests.
Three were themselves visibly patterned:
- CAAR Atlas - Appaloosa
- Excelsior’s High Voltage Tazer - Harlequin
- Excelsior’s Independent Dillon - Reverse Appaloosa*
The other two also carried important patterned connections.
Illini’s Alegra, registered White, was produced from SH Aztec. Aztec’s own phenotype has not yet been conclusively established through current research, but her sire was Appaloosa male Curly Calib. Alegra subsequently produced four offspring, including verified Appaloosa Illini’s Calib.
CAA Canoli, also registered White, was produced from Harlequin female Senna’s Zoey. Her only registered offspring, Max M, was registered Dark Brown.
Paulo therefore did not establish one dominant family. Instead, his genetics entered several different Appaloosa- and Harlequin-connected pedigrees.

The Tazer Branch
Among Paulo’s descendants, Excelsior’s High Voltage Tazer represents one of his strongest continuing patterned branches.
Tazer produced seven registered offspring. Six of those seven are currently verified Appaloosa or Harlequin.
Her offspring include multiple animals that established additional branches, and patterned descendants continue through grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
For an animal only one generation removed from Paulo, Tazer substantially amplified the patterned influence of a sire who himself produced only five registered offspring.
The Dillon Branch
Excelsior’s Independent Dillon represents another important continuation.
Dillon displayed a distinctive reverse Appaloosa phenotype and produced nine registered offspring. Four of those offspring are currently verified Appaloosa or Harlequin.
His descendants also include additional patterned animals in subsequent generations, extending Paulo’s influence farther into modern pedigrees.
Together, the Tazer and Dillon branches demonstrate how a relatively small first generation can produce a disproportionately large downstream impact.
A Patterned Outcross
Paulo’s place in Appaloosa and Harlequin history should be interpreted carefully. Current evidence does not establish Paulo himself as the origin of the pattern appearing in his descendants. In fact, the opposite is what makes his history particularly interesting.
His known matings repeatedly brought his genetics together with females from established or pattern-associated families. That makes Paulo best understood as a patterned-line outcross - a genetic contributor repeatedly introduced into Appaloosa and Harlequin pedigrees, after which multiple patterned branches emerged and continued.
From only five registered offspring came 21 currently documented grandchildren. At least 11 of those grandchildren are presently verified Appaloosa or Harlequin. And through animals such as Tazer and Dillon, that influence continues into still later generations.
Legacy
Paulo’s story demonstrates another way a bloodline can become historically significant. He was not a prolific sire. He did not leave dozens of direct offspring. Current research does not allow us to claim that he alone introduced the pattern appearing among his descendants even though he was an Apploosa himself.
Instead, Paulo became valuable through connection. His five offspring combined his genetics with several already significant patterned families. Those crosses produced Appaloosa and Harlequin offspring at a high enough frequency and across enough independent branches that Paulo became firmly embedded within later spotted pedigrees.
The progression is striking:
5 registered offspring → 3 verified patterned offspring → 21 documented grandchildren → at least 11 verified patterned grandchildren
His influence then continued through additional spotted generations. What initially appears to be a very small production record therefore became something much larger.
Archive Summary
NWA/Hearsum Paulo represents a different form of influence within Appaloosa and Harlequin alpaca history. With only five registered offspring, his direct production was limited, yet those offspring repeatedly combined Paulo with established or pattern-associated female lines, including Harlequin Senna’s Zoey, Harlequin Candlelight’s Cookies and Cream, and a daughter of Appaloosa Curly Calib.
Three of Paulo’s five offspring are themselves verified Appaloosa or Harlequin, whole only four reproduced. Together, those branches produced 21 currently documented grandchildren, at least 11 of which are presently verified Appaloosa or Harlequin.
His maternal ancestry adds another unresolved historical question. Former owner Carol Karsten recalls unusual spotting on Paulo’s dam, 11Ava Jewel, whose own dam was the blue-eyed white NWA, LTD Treasure - an animal Karsten also recalls appearing in the maternal ancestry of well-known Appaloosa Xus. Whether that maternal family contributed directly to Paulo’s patterned legacy remains unproven, but the connection is worth preserving.
Paulo’s importance lies not in a large first generation, but in the way a very small number of offspring placed his genetics into several lines that would become increasingly important to later Appaloosa and Harlequin pedigrees.
