An Unexpected Traveler

History doesn't always arrive the way we expect it.

During the final major Peruvian alpaca important of 1998, one pregnant female made the journey to the United States carrying an unborn cria that would quitely become part of Appaloosa and Harlequin history. That cria was 6 Peruvian Century.

Conceived in Peru but born in the U.S. on June 27, 1999, Century represents one of the earliest documented Harlequin alpacas connected directly to the final Peruvian importation.

Although he produced only fourteen registered offspring, his influence extends far beyond that number. Rather than founding a large breeding dynasty, Century preserved a rare genetic branch that continues to appear within modern Appaloosa Harlequin pedigrees more than twenty-five years later.

His story is not one of numbers - it's one of perserverance and survival.

Historical Significance

Century occupies a unique place in North American Appaloosa history. Because his dam was imported while pregnant during the final Peruvian importation, he represents one of the first U.S. born offpsring from that historic group.

Unlike many influential herdsires remembered for producing large numbers of offspring, Century's legacy was perserved through only a handful of descendants. Those surviving branches continue to connect modern breeders with one of the earliest documented Harlequin bloodlines available in today's registry.

Production Record

Between July 2002 and December 2007, Century produced 14 registered offspring, evenly divided between seven males and seven females.

Current research confirms:

• 3 appaloosa/harlequin offspring
• 2 spotted-producing daughters that established surviving branches
• Multiple descendants still represented in the modern registry

Legacy

Century's influence is measured less by the number of offspring and more by the descendants that carried his unique phenotype into future generations.

At present, research has confirmed three appaloosa/harlequin offspring:

• Coffee Pot Elke
• Flatwoods 100 Year Old Scotch
• Senna's Zoey

Of these, Coffee Pot Elke and Senna's Zoey are currently known to have continued producing spotted descendants and have active relatives in today's breeding pool. Of the fourteen, unfortunately only three have identified production beyond third generation.
