Excelsior’s Patriotic Spirit helped shape the Appaloosa and Harlequin breeding program at Elderwood Farms in Millington, Tennessee. Although Spirit has been sold, his genetic line remains firmly represented through retained offspring and another generation of spotted cria. We had a hard time parting with this boy, and his descendants remind us why! During his time here, we appreciated Spirit’s masculine presence, strong conformation, and tremendous fleece density. His show career began as a mature male, when judges commented on his fleece brightness and the handle he had maintained with age. He earned four first-place ribbons, including wins in both halter and fleece at the 2018 AOA National Show. FPC Peruvian Aiko was a much-loved Harlequin Appaloosa Huacaya female whose influence continues throughout our patterned breeding program at Elderwood Farms in Tennessee. We loved her beautiful head, long staple, and soft, bright fleece with coverage from head to toe. What she produced gave us even more reason to treasure her. Aiko joined us unproven through a herd dispersal. As TGA Mario’s only registered offspring, she represented a distinctive genetic line tracing through Senna’s Zoey to 6Peruvian Century. Preserving that line became an important part of our breeding decisions. Her dam, Zenith’s Peruvian Kismit, added depth through ancestors including PPPPeruvian Royal Fawn, Majestado De Peru, and 6Peruvian 007. Aiko brought those genetics together with the patterned ancestry that would become such a meaningful part of her legacy. All six of Aiko’s known cria were Appaloosa or Harlequin Appaloosa, including her five registered offspring. We lost Aiko and her final cria to birthing complications, but retained three daughters by different sires to continue her line. Those daughters have since produced another generation of patterned alpacas. Retained Daughters and Their Descendants: • ELWD’s Totally Bewitched - By WT Gold’s Paiute; dam of ELWD’s Without a Hitch and multi-champion Elderwood’s Twitch Craft. This branch carries Aiko’s genetic line into our herdsire lineup as well as our foundation females. • Elderwood’s Voodoo Queen - By Golden Touch’s Easy Rider; blue-ribbon-winning Harlequin Appaloosa and dam of ELWD’s Voodoo LaRoux and Elderwood’s Voodoo Veil. • Elderwood’s Maybe It Was Memphis - By Excelsior’s Patriotic Spirit; blue-ribbon winner and dam of Appaloosa Elderwood’s Bonanza, extending Aiko’s influence through the third retained daughter. Aiko was a girl we felt privileged to have in our herd, and watching her daughters and grandchildren develop gives us so much to be proud of. Epic X Celestial Cygnus is a proven Appaloosa Huacaya herdsire combining distinctive pattern, championship quality, and a pedigree built around generations of accomplished genetics. Cygnus carries a highly defined spotted blanket with strong consistency across his pattern, while his fleece has continued to grade well across multiple shearings. He is a strong, boxy male with substantial bone and correct structure, earning two Color Championships along with numerous first-place wins in halter and walking fleece. Cygnus’ paternal pedigree brings together several lines that are especially important to our patterned breeding program. His sire, Enchanted Hill LuTau, is out of Vintage Cashmere Utopia and Enchanted Hill Appalucy, combining the influence of Aussie Rockford and imported Harlequin Appaloosa Maria’s Angel. Aussie Rockford is a son of Hannahruh, another historic animal included in our ongoing Appy Origins research. These lines add meaningful depth behind the pattern we see in Cygnus today. His dam, Snowmass Elite Celestial Legend, brings another layer of quality to the pedigree. In addition to producing Appaloosa offspring, she maintained Top 1% EPD rankings across six fleece categories into her teens. Elderwood’s Maybe It Was Memphis is an Elderwood-bred Harlequin Appaloosa Huacaya female whose show record and spotted offspring give us plenty to be excited about. Memphis has earned eleven first-place ribbons across halter and walking fleece, including first in her halter class at the 2024 AOA National Show. We loved how this girl developed, and she earned her place in our spotted foundation herd!

Memphis is a daughter of Excelsior’s Patriotic Spirit and FPC Peruvian Aiko, with Appaloosa and Harlequin ancestry through both parents. She is one of three Aiko daughters we retained, alongside her maternal half sisters ELWD’s Totally Bewitched and Elderwood’s Voodoo Queen. Keeping these daughters allowed us to continue Aiko’s genetic line through three different sires.

Her own production includes Appaloosa son Elderwood’s Bonanza. From Aiko to Memphis to Bonanza, this branch now spans three generations of patterned alpacas, giving us another reason to appreciate what Memphis brings to our program.
